Waste Minimization

As part of its involvement in the Waste Minimization category, this school is pledging to implement the following waste reduction practices on its campus:

• Active program to sell or donate campus surplus property.
• Promoting inter-office reusable envelopes for campus mail and review/improve campus systems for reclaiming extra envelopes for reuse.
• Active program to reduce unwanted bulk mail from off-campus sources (e.g. creating an opt-out registry for staff and faculty; housing mail room send out bulk mail removal postcards on behalf of former residents, encouraging the cancellation of unnecessary or duplicate subscriptions etc.).
• Establishing post-consumer waste and biodegradable dinnerware composting program.

For the 2009 competition, schools that participate in the Competition Division will have their FTE population calculated using standardized data submitted to the federal Department of Education's IPEDS program. This is the number by which reported weights will be divided to determine per capita recycling weights. For more information about the FTE calculations, refer to the IPEDS section of the Rules page.

Data reported will come from Actual Weights.

Materials from the Residence Halls are captured with a compactor truck and then drive over a scale to be weighed before dumping the material. Materials from the Academic/Administrative buildings are captured by hand/cube van and delivered to our on-campus sorting facility. Once there, the contaminants are removed from the recycling and the materials are weighed over a certified scale. They are then consolidated in roll-offs and delivered to the county recycling facility, where we get another weight of the materials delivered.
