Waste Minimization

As part of its involvement in the Waste Minimization category, this school is pledging to implement the following waste reduction practices on its campus:

• Purchasing office equipment with waste prevention in mind (e.g. electronic interface, double-sided capabilities; sourcing and purchasing for durability, etc.)
• Active program to sell or donate campus surplus property.
• Promoting inter-office reusable envelopes for campus mail and review/improve campus systems for reclaiming extra envelopes for reuse.
• Creating and promoting a system for the campus community to report wasteful practices and offer suggestions for waste reduction.
• Creating active program to educate employee and students about waste minimization practices (e.g. incorporating waste minimization information into new employee / new student orientation programs; giving regular presentations to campus groups and departments; setting up public displays, etc.).
• Recognizing waste reduction / materials management roles in relevant staff job descriptions including administrative assistants, purchasing officials, and building proctors.

For the 2009 competition, schools that participate in the Competition Division will have their FTE population calculated using standardized data submitted to the federal Department of Education's IPEDS program. This is the number by which reported weights will be divided to determine per capita recycling weights. For more information about the FTE calculations, refer to the IPEDS section of the Rules page.

Data reported will come from Some Weights / Some Estimates.

Recycling is gathered daily from classrooms and offices and our recycling centers around the campus. The recycle material is collected and placed into two-wheel totes, located on each floor of each building. The estimated weight capacity for a tote is 200 lbs. of mixed papers. The full totes are transferred to the campus main recycle collection point. We collect all the recycle paper/plastic/cans from our recycling centers put in baskets and weigh them with our scales (we have three digital scales weighing item from 2 tons to 2 grams). We total the totes and baskets and generate a weekly report. The Recycle Contractor collects and weighs the recycle material and forwards a monthly report. Our Waste Contractor has given us an average weight for each dumpster when full. Our Waste Management Department has marked each dumpster at three different levels to get an accurate result. We observe and record the volume of each dumpster daily. We use the volume-to-weight conversion approved by a RecycleMania Staff member for our weekly report.
