Waste Minimization
As part of its involvement in the Waste Minimization category, this school is pledging to implement the following waste reduction practices on its campus:
Whole Campus
Partial Campus
Number of FTE Students:
2,107
Number of FTE Staff and Faculty:
562
Full-time Equivalent Campus Population: 2,669.00
For the 2009 competition, schools that participate in the Competition Division will have their FTE population calculated using standardized data submitted to the federal Department of Education's IPEDS program. This is the number by which reported weights will be divided to determine per capita recycling weights. For more information about the FTE calculations, refer to the IPEDS section of the Rules page.
Data reported will come from Some Weights / Some Estimates.
We get as empty as possible prior to the start of the competition at our Recycle Yard (and two remote compactor locations) where we have our paper roll off, cardboard compactor, solid waste compactor and commingled roll off. Our carter, Royal, gives us real time weights for these roll offs during the competition as they are emptied. I use placeholders from previous years as I wait for the paper to be emptied at the end of the competition, and as needed for other containers that take longer to empty. For our bulk solid waste container at an eatery (1x5 yard) we get two real weights over the course of the contest and extrapolate based on these weights. Similarly, we get real weights on our smaller cardboard containers (2 of them) 2x during the competition. For food scraps, we weigh a representative container of each type and use that for the competition. The collector counts containers as they come off the dock and logs them as percent full. Our Compost Commando team counts buckets each week as they remove them from the residence halls.
