Results—RecycleMania 2007
Total Pounds Recycled: 41.3 million pounds
RecycleMania raised the stakes in 2007 as the number of participating colleges and universities more than doubled—a record 201 schools from across the country stepped up to compete! The competition opened with much speculation as to whether the West Coast would dominate many of the contests again this year. While it remained strong, the rest of the country enlisted challenging rookies and outstanding campaigns to make a comeback in 2007!
In a repeat of last year's performance, the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos held on to the title of Grand Champion, edging out the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers and the Hornets of Kalamazoo. Although many veteran RecycleManiacs returned in 2007, the Cougars were the only repeat victor from last year.
Just as the buzzer sounded, rookie team Lamont-Doherty made a mad dash for the top spot in the Per Capita Classic, overthrowing Sheldon Jackson's domination of first place in the final seconds of the game! The Lamont-Doherty Lions of Columbia University rounded out their victory in the Paper contest, recycling nearly 90 pounds of paper per person—twice as much as the next competitor.
With its long-established recycling program, Rutgers University took the cake (and the leftovers) in the Food Service Organics contest and also became the first Gorilla Prize winner in the history of RecycleMania. East Coast schools swept the top five spots in the Food Service Organics contest—kudos to runners-up Bard College in the Food Service Organics competition and Stanford University for the Gorilla Prize.
Keeping the dynasty alive, the West Coast made an impressive showing in the Corrugated Cardboard category. West LA Community College took home the title by recycling more than 50 pounds of cardboard per person, with the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos coming in second.
The Longhorns at University of Texas at Austin pulled ahead to take home a trophy in Waste Minimization, while the Kalamazoo Hornets gathered a swarm of containers to fly to the top of the Bottles and Cans category, with Rutgers and the University of Oregon battling it out for second and third place, respectively.
