Electronics

Electronics is a new pilot category to RecycleMania for the 2012 Tournament.  Given the unique collection logistics for handling electronics, this category is structured different from all other RecycleMania categories. The 2012 competition is being labeled as a “Pilot” in recognition that the inaugural year’s experience will likely result in changes for future years. The pilot Electronics category:

  • Is limited to a single, month long tracking and reporting period.
  • Counts all sources collected on campus, including:
    • Materials collected from individual students and staff
    • Institutionally recovered materials typically handled by a property dept.
    • Special collection events
  • Ranks schools on a “gorilla” basis, i.e. gross quantities without a per capita divider.
  • Is weight-based. Volume-to-weight conversions are allowed.
  • Requires the electronic materials a school reports be handled by recyclers that are third-party certified to an accredited electronics recycler certification program*.

Following this structure for the pilot competition, RecycleMania recognizes the competition rankings will not reflect a perfectly level playing field, or that all schools will be in a position to meet the tracking and reporting requirements. Input from participating colleges is encouraged and will be solicited at the end of the Tournament as the basis for refining the Electronics category for future years.
